The ritual paintings of the Yao people are not merely artistic works but also serve as a visual map of their beliefs, vividly depicting the spiritual world and Taoist philosophy through images. Each painting is a unique piece, created according to specific ceremonial requirements, embodying the "secret teachings" passed down within each family lineage. However, in the modern age, the traditional craft of ritual painting artwork and the skilled artisans well-versed in this culture are gradually fading. Few of the younger generation are aware of the intricate techniques and rich symbolic knowledge embedded in this art form.

The book “Ancient Yao Paintings” presents a collection of 8 sets of ancient paintings owned by Truc Lam Handmade Co., Ltd. It includes 38 ritual masks, 3 shamanic hats, and 131 paintings, which were collected from the 1990s in the regions of Lang Son, Cao Bang, Lai Chau, and Hoa Binh. This publication is the result of several months of research, restoration, and fieldwork by Truc Lam Handmade, in collaboration with experts, translators, and associates. This photo book marks a first attempt to present the entire collection to both Vietnamese and international audiences. It is a meaningful step in our journey to preserve, revive, and share this unique ritual art form that is steadily vanishing from contemporary life.
